The class will end you will eat all together what you prepared, completing this typical Italian lunch, you will have a digestive as the locals do. It will be as a lunch with friends.
In the afternoon you will have a walking tour of the old Maritime Republic. Genova, on the northwest coast of Italy, is Italy’s principal seaport. Genoa was 2004 European Culture Capital; money flowed into the port city made famous by Columbus and now it is a better place than ever to visit. It has a fascinating aquarium, an interesting port area, and a historic center said to be the largest medieval quarter in Europe, with a wealth of churches, palaces, and museums.
Your local guide will show you the most beautiful spots of the city: Via Garibaldi, heart of the UNESCO World Heritage sites with the richness of its “Palazzi”, their frescoes and gilded decorations, Piazza De Ferrari, elegant architecture of the 20th C.; Columbus’s house, the imposing Palazzo Ducale, and the stories of the ancient republic; the Cathedral and its treasures, Palazzo San Giorgio, the story and Glory of the ancient Marine Republic, creating the bases of our modern economy.
At the end of the tour, free time at your disposal, to discover more of Genova, before enjoying a delicious seafood dinner in an elegant restaurant on the seaside. Return to your accommodation for overnight.
DAY 3: 5 Terre (B,D)
After breakfast at the resort, leave for a half day excursion at the famous Cinque Terre: a string of five fishing villages perched high on the Italian Riviera, which until recently were linked only by mule tracks and accessible only by rail or water.
You will board the ferry and make stops in the five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. An ancient system of footpaths is still the best way to visit these beautiful villages.
The Cinque Terre is noted for its beauty. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces to cultivate grapes and olives on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. Each town has a distinct character, but all share a similar aesthetic: narrow, tower-like pastel-colored houses cluster atop one another in an appealingly hodge-podge pattern, and steep streets are interrupted by staircases cutting through the towns’ historic centers. The scenery in Cinque Terre is simply breathtaking.
This beautiful area was recognized in 1997 by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and today it is a National Park and Protected Marine Area with the aim of preserve this great cultural heritage and natural environment.
Independent lunch in a typical “osteria”, and in the afternoon you will visit a family-owned farm and winery in Riomaggiore; during the tour you will walk through the sea-view steep slopes and explore the dynamic vineyards, continue then to the cellar and enjoy some quality wine tasting, from the known Schiacchetrà to the classic local white wines, but also surprising reds and rosés. Listen to a local wine expert, owner of the farm, proudly explaining the production of his wines, safeguarding local products that do not have famous name.
Apart from the vineyards, the farm is also involved in beekeeping and the production of integral honey; also, they have a small plantation of lemon trees used for limoncello and jams.
At the end of the day, come back to the mainland and reach your small luxury boutique hotel/resort, relax some time, and have dinner at the property’s restaurant. Overnight.
DAY 4: Portofino – San Fruttuoso – Santa Margherita Ligure (B,D)
Breakfast at the resort, today will be dedicated to the Riviera Ligure, you will visit some of the most beautiful cities of the area, among which: Portofino, San Fruttuoso e Santa Margherita Ligure. Portofino is a famous tourist resort located in the province of Genova; the city is considered as the hub of tourism always visited by celebrities. It welcomes the tourist with its beautiful shops and a natural park; the beach with its clear water and the charming beauty of nature surroundings have helped the enormous growth of this lovely place. You cannot miss San Fruttuoso, stucked away in a tiny, pristine bay between Camogli and Portofino surrounded by lush vegetation. To add to its exclusiveness, you can only reach it by sea or on foot. Visit the charming Abbey which has an interesting and rich history from being a monastery to a pirate’s den to a humble fishermen home and then the residence of Princess of Doria. Another reason San Fruttuoso is often visited is for the famous Christ of the Abyss dive. The dive is not difficult as it takes place in relatively shallow waters but is an experience to remember earning this diving spot worldwide fame. The sea waters here are incredibly clear and pristine so do not forget to take your swimming gear when you plan your trip.
Next stop will be Santa Margherita Ligure, a fair-sized town, large enough to receive the huge number of tourists that come there, visit the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rose (already St. Margaret of Antioch’s Basilica) and Villa Durazzo Centurione, which is a monument to the faded glory of the Riviera. The garden terraces are a public park and a pleasant place to sit.
Back to the resort, dinner and overnight.
DAY 5: Val Nervia&Medieval Villages – Rossese Wine Tasting (B,D)
After breakfast at the resort, you will go for a full day excursion to the Val Nervia. Visit the most representatives of the Medieval villages in the “Imperiese”: Dolceacqua and Apricale. There are four more villages (Castellaro – Taggia – Badalucco – Triora), that you can decide to visit in the afternoon, as an alternative to the wine tasting in Dolceacqua.
Apricale is a beautiful and charming historic center. The present town goes back the IX century and preserves part of the medieval walls, three doors with pointed arches and the ancient castle. Dolceacqua most attractive feature is the oldest part of the village, called Terra, which is at the foot of Mount Rebuffao, dominated by the Doria’s Castle. Also, this village is known for the famous XV century, Romanesque bridge that Claude Monet had painted in 1884, defining it “a gem of lightness”.
Independent lunch and in the afternoon, stop at “Cooperativa Riviera dei Fiori” in Dolceacqua for a Rossese wine tasting: it is believed that the introduction of this vine in Liguria has taken place by the Greeks, but there is also a version that supports the Etruscan thesis. During the Middle Ages Andrea Doria elected it as festive wine for its fleet and centuries later Napoleon also had the opportunity to taste it, sending many bottles to Paris.
Its characteristics, its long tradition, and its Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) make Rossese one of the most popular and appreciated Ligurian wines.
At the end of the tour, you will reach your charming accommodation in the Riviera dei Fiori, check in and have some free time to relax. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 6: Bordighera And Noble Villas (B,D)
Breakfast at the resort: this morning goes to Bordighera, an elegant city, center of the elite tourism of the mid-1800s. Royals, writers and artists from all over Europe but especially English, built here their gorgeous villas and planted exotic gardens. You will visit the splendid villa of Queen Margherita di Savoia, the Villa Garnier, built by the famous architect of the Paris Opera House and the Giardino Pallanca. Also, your tour manager will lead you in a walking tour of Bordighera historical center: a maze of narrow alleys surrounded by massive walls.
Just behind Bordighera do not miss Vallebona with the Vecchia Distilleria (old distillery) where they produce Acqua di fiori d’arancio (bitter orange blossoms water): Italian Riviera aristocratic essence, a natural distillate that has been used for centuries as a beauty secret, as an herbal remedy and above all as an aroma in the kitchen. Here, Pietro Guglielmi grows bitter orange trees few years ago completely lost and distils bitter orange blossoms water with the old methods of his ancestors. Actually, this precious water is recognized to be a Slow Food Presidia of Liguria.
Dinner tonight will be at a seafood restaurant in the Riviera dei Fiori.
DAY 7: Sanremo – Taggia And Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasting (B,D)
After breakfast at the resort, board your minivan and head to Sanremo, another center of elite tourism of past times as the hotels and villas in Art Nuveau or eclectic style testify.
The first stop in town is Villa Nobel, a Moorish-style building which hosted the famous Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel from 1890 to 1896. It was here that he decided to establish the famous “Nobel prizes”. Nowadays the villa thrives with prestigious cultural initiatives, and it houses permanent museum of Nobel relics together with a gallery of Italian Nobel Prizes. Its park is full of age-old and precious plants.
Proceed then to the characteristic historical center, “La Pigna”, which once was the pulse of a no longer existing Sanremo. It was the actual old town and now it is both the “humblest” and the most spontaneous area of the town. It is full of covered alleys, little squares, and terraced houses together with dull colors and long silences which in turn create emotions and sensations unknown to mass tourism. You will reach next Piazza dell’Oratorio, where you can admire the XVIII century frescoes inside the oratory. Do not miss the Palace of the Counts Sapia Rossi, Napoleon was hosted here in 1794. Last stop before reaching Sanremo’s city center is Madonna della Costa (Our Lady of the Coast): this XVII century’s sanctuary was once a safe landmark for sailors approaching Sanremo. The interior is richly decorated with marbles and stuccoes.
Independent lunch, and in the afternoon, go to a local farmhouse in Taggia, where you will know more about the extra virgin olive oil production process. Going back to the origins of Taggia means rediscovering the story of a territory where the presence of man is confirmed by the prehistoric remains in the Grotta dell’Arma or the legend according to which Greek navigators on Italian coasts identified this valley and gave it the name of “Taleia”, a name that is quite similar to Taggia and which means “blooming”.
The original olive trees in the Sanremo hinterland were native to this part of Europe. They were growing before man existed. Today the crop is riper, less bitter, and bigger but the Ligurian DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) oil produced is of the highest quality. The village of Taggia, in fact, gives name to the local variety of olive, called the Taggiasca, and the town’s wealth is, in part, still based on this fine fruit. The olive itself is extremely hardy and grows from sea level up to 1,000 meters. Some of the trees live for 300 hundred years and they all produce three colors of fruits – red, black, and green.
Your expert tour manager will bring you to a local “frantoio”, where you could see the original water wheel and olive presses below the present factory.
Return to your charming accommodation, relax some time before an incredibly special Ligurian Dinner.
DAY 8: Milan (B,D)
After breakfast at the resort, proceed to Milan for a half day guided tour.
A local art guide will introduce you to Italy’s most stylish city: first stop will be at the medieval Sforza Castle. A grand medieval Castle and fortress, the Sforzesco was once residence for the ruling family of Milan and now houses several of the city’s museums and art collections. Visit the splendid Duomo, one of the world’s largest, most striking Gothic cathedrals. Something like 135 spires and 3,200 statues are crammed onto the roof and façade of the building.
Walk inside Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a 19th century glass vaulted shopping arcade. Brimming with fashionable shops and cafes, it is often called the “salotto di Milano” or “Milan’s drawing room” for its importance over the years as a common meeting point Milanesi.
Enter Milan’s most famous Opera House, the fabulous La Scala theater. Founded in 1778 and still in use, some of the world’s greatest musicians and opera singers have performed here including Pavarotti and Giuseppe Verdi, whose famous operas such as Falstaff often premiered in this amazing location.
Independent lunch and in the afternoon, free time at your disposal to know more about Italy’s fashion capital, you maybe want to have walk to the Qudrilatero della Moda (Milan’s fashion district). Visitors come from all over the world to shop in the luxury boutiques and showrooms, or just to stroll around and admire the shop windows, often showcases of superb taste and exclusive design. Or you can visit Brera District, Milan’s artistic heart. In fact, as you stroll along the streets of this ancient borough, you cannot help but be enchanted by its almost surreal atmosphere boasting small artisan’s workshops or quaint stores selling canvases and paints. Additionally, Brera is home to the impressive Accademia di Belle Arti, where visitors can admire Milan’s famous painting collection at the Pinacoteca (the Brera Picture Gallery), the historic Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense (Braidense National Library), the Museo Astronomico (The Astronomical Museum), the oldest scientific research institute in the city and the Giardino Botanico (Botanical Gardens), an evocative green space located.

II WORLD WAR IN SICILY
II WORLD WAR IN SICILY
PALERMO, MARSALA, ERICE – AGRIGENTO , GELA – PACHINO – MODICA, SYRACUSE, GERBINI AREA – CATANIA, AGIRA – TAORMINA
8 Days/7 Nights
ITINERARY
1st day: PALERMO
Arrive in Palermo. Meet your driver and transfer to our hotel in the city centre. After some time at leisure, enjoy dinner. Overnight
2nd day: PALERMO – MARSALA
Breakfast at hotel. We begin our day with a tour of Palermo. See how the cultures that surround it and the forces that once invaded its shores have influenced this city. The target of heavy air raids during the war many neighbourhoods of Palermo were nearly levelled. In the afternoon, depart to Marsala, the city where, on 10 July 1943, the allied troops arrived in Sicily. There is no monument that remembers that event. No monument that recalls the so-called “Husky operation” (this is the name of the landing in Sicily), an operation that saw in action the largest fleet that had ever involved the Mediterranean Sea.
Our tour escort will give all the explanations. Enjoy a wine tasting at a local cellar in Marsala and then a delicious dinner. Overnight
3rd day: MARSALA – ERICE – AGRIGENTO
Breakfast at hotel. Depart to the medieval village of Erice. Suggestions and charm, traditions and stories from the past, beauty, and wonder. You can feel all this while walking through the streets of Erice, a village among the most beautiful in Italy. Its history is enhanced by the poet Virgil, who cites Erice in his most famous work, the Aeneid, making it a stop in the Trojan hero Aeneas’s journey; the hero is also the mythical founder of Rome.
Continue to Agrigento. Lunch by your own. In the afternoon visit to the Valley of Temples, a UNSECO World Heritage Site, has one of the best collections of Greek ruins in all of Sicily. Dinner and overnight.
4th day: AGRIGENTO – GELA – PACHINO – MODICA
Breakfast at hotel. Depart to Gela where the American forces landed and then Pachino were the Canadian 1st Infantry Division landed on July 9 and 10, 1944. In the afternoon, we arrive in Modica. Enjoy a chocolate tasting at a local chocolate producer. The chocolate in Modica is made with a very old recipe, none other than from the Aztecs. If you are wondering what the Aztecs have to do with Sicily, think about the Spanish conquistadors in South America and you will see that the same Spanish have dominated this island for a couple of centuries
Dinner and overnight.
5th day: MODICA – SYRACUSE
Breakfast at hotel. Depart to Syracuse (UNESCO World Heritage) and it’s War Cemetery, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of World War II. We will first have a visit to the archaeological area and then on to Ortigia, the historical center. In the centrally located Piazza Duomo, besides to visit the Cathedral we will be able to enter the anti-aircraft shelter.
Lunch by your own. In the afternoon visit to the “English cemetery”. The site of the cemetery was selected in 1943 at an early stage in the operations for the capture of Sicily. In this cemetery most of the graves are those of men who lost their lives in the landings in Sicily on 10 July 1943, as part of the early stages of the campaign to capture the island (Operation Husky).
They include those of a considerable number who belonged to the airborne force that was landed immediately west of the town during the night 9-10 July. Graves were brought into Syracuse War Cemetery from Lentini. There is one grave for a casualty from World War I, a merchant seaman who was originally buried in the Marsala British Cemetery. In addition, three special memorials commemorate men known to have been originally buried in other cemeteries in the region, but whose graves could not be found on concentration. Dinner. Accommodation at hotel.
6th day: SYRACUSE – GERBINI AREA – CATANIA
Breakfast at hotel. Depart to Catania area. In the south of Catania, we shall find the Ponte Primo Sole. Here you follow the traces of 51st Highland Division during the Gerbini Battle, that moved towards Paternò where stand the Norman Castle. Then continue to Catania. Day dedicated to the visit to the second biggest city in Sicily but also to the places of the memory as per the British Cemetery. On 10 July 1943, following the successful conclusion of the north African campaign in mid-May, a combined allied force of 160,000 Commonwealth and American troops invaded Sicily as a prelude to the assault on mainland Italy. The Italians, who would shortly make peace with the Allies and re-enter the war on their side, offered little determined resistance but German opposition was vigorous and stubborn. The campaign in Sicily came to an end on 17 August when the two allied forces came together at Messina but failed to cut off the retreating Axis lines.
Catania War Cemetery contains burials from the later stages of the campaign, from Lentini northwards. Many died in the heavy fighting just short of Catania (the town was taken on 5 August) and in the battle for the Simeto river bridgehead. Catania War Cemetery contains 2,135 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 113 of them unidentified. Then travel to Catania and visit the Historical Museum of the Landing in 1943.
7th day: CATANIA – AGIRA – TAORMINA – CATANIA
Breakfast at hotel. In the morning depart to Agira to visit the Canadian War cemetery (Agira was part of the “Etna line “area of battle of the 8th British Army (Adrano, Centuripe, Regalbuto, Assoro). Then arrive on Mount Etna for a wine tasting and lunch in a farmhouse at the mount footsteps. Then continue to Taormina.
Visit to the famous Greek theatre. The ancient Greeks loved to construct their buildings in beautiful scenic locations Here they found the pairing of Etna and the bay of Naxos, with a wonderful view that when the air is clear can reach the coast of Calabria.
It is, surely, the main monument of the city, not only for its intrinsic artistic value, but also for the scenic location in which it is placed. The view enjoyed from up there is even defined as the view par excellence. The one that is not to be missed when in Sicily.

Therefore, the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt three times between 1540 and 1589. In 1768 it was ceded to France.

The archaeological site of Aléria is made up of vestiges of the pre-Roman necropolis, of the Roman villa and of the ancient Roman city, completely updated since 1965. It constitutes the first Corsican ancient ensemble, with forum, porches, temple, nymphaeum, house and shops, spa and mosaics, industrial establishment, road network, etc. Numerous pieces (furniture, ceramics, coins, sculptures, bronzes …) are in the museum (museum) Jérôme-Carcopino. The San Marcelo church was the first one built in Corsica (in the first millennium), destroyed, then rebuilt several times, reusing stones from the Roman village. The remains of Diana’s tower, the old Genoese tower, is still visible between the coast and Diana’s pond.Continue to Bastia. accommodation

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to St Florent, an old Genoese city, now a well-known spa.

5th day Bastia– Aléria – Bonifacio – Porto Vecchio
Breakfast at the hotel. Today we recommend visiting Porto Vecchio. The city of Porto-Vecchio was built in 1539 on top of a rocky promontory by order of the Genoese senators. Despite having fertile land and a good situation in a bay, the area is affected by malaria by salt marshes, and besieged by barbarian pirates. Therefore, the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt three times between 1540 and 1589. In 1768 it was ceded to France.
Departure along the east coast towards Aléria. The archaeological site of Aleria is made up of vestiges of the pre-Roman necropolis, of the Roman villa and of the ancient Roman city, completely updated since 1965.
The remains of Diana’s tower, the old Genoese tower, is still visible between the coast and Diana’s pond. Continue to Bonifacio for the city visit. Continue to Porto Vecchio. accommodation
6th day Porto Vecchio –Bavella – Sartène – Ajaccio

First stop will be San Marino: in just 61 square meters, San Marino has a large number of architectural and natural resources which are a pleasure for the eyes of the visitors. The guided tour will show you the beauty that should not absolutely miss inside the walls of the Republic. Let’s start from the historic center: here you will find the Government Palace, the second of the three towers that were built for defensive and control purposes on the top of Mount Titano and that now hosts the Museum of Ancient Arms, the Basilica of the Holy; the Church of San Francesco with the beautiful art gallery and museum located inside; the Church of the Capuchins; the permanent exhibition of handicraft of the town. You will surely find interesting also the Museum of Modern Weapons, the one of the Vintage Cars and the inevitable Wax Museum and the Museum of Curiosities.
Independent lunch and in the afternoon head to San Leo, a spectacular cliff top town and fortress which dominates the Marecchia Valley. Due to its naturally impregnable position on inaccessible high ground, it was an important strategic stronghold in the Montefeltro area, and through the ages it was dominated and contended by many historical families, including the Medici and the Della Rovere. The imposing fortress of San Leo was designed by the multi-talented Renaissance architect, Francesco Di Giorgio Martini, and it’s an outstanding example of military and defensive architecture in Italy.
It was here, in the fortress of San Leo that the enigmatic adventurer the Count of Cagliostro was imprisoned for heresy until his death by the Inquisition.
In the evening return to the resort. Tonight, the master chef will prepare for you a delicious dinner with local products, accompanied by famous red wines from Romagna hills. Overnight.
DAY 4: Cooking Class at Casa Artusi – Ravenna (B,D)
After breakfast at the resort you will go northern to the sleepy town of Ravenna, where you will be taken back in time by the breathtaking 6th and 7th century mosaics, all with your own private art guide. These are some of the most gorgeous mosaics in the world. Located close to the Adriatic Coast, Ravenna is a town with a whole lot of history! The Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus built a port here, denoting the strategic importance of Ravenna and later the city became one of the main hubs of Byzantine culture in Italy. You will learn all about the town’s history and visit some major highlights such as the mosaics of 5th century Galla Placidia (daughter of Emperor Theodosius), the Basilica of San Francesco with the Dante’s Tomb, the Basilica of San Vitale (with some of the best early Christian art in Italy) and more.
We suggest you to have a light lunch, since in the afternoon we organized a special cooking class experience at Casa Artusi, the first center of gastronomic culture devoted entirely to Italian home cookers, founded in the name of the cultured gastronomist from Forlimpopoli, Pellegrino Artusi, author and restaurateur and recognized father of the Italian cooking. Visit the famous cultural center dedicated to home cooking Italian cuisine and attend a practical course (hands-on-cooking class) for preparing traditional Italian menu, using top quality ingredients.
Dinner will be at Casa Artusi with the meals you have prepared. Return to the resort, overnight.
DAY 5: Bologna and Ferrara (B,D)
Breakfast at the resort, this morning you will leave Romagna heading to Emilia, the northern part of the region; first stop will be Bologna, the capital of Emilia Romagna, nicknamed by local “la dotta, la grassa, la rossa” (the learned, the fat, the red). These names come from three characteristics which define the city: Bologna’s historical university, its mouthwatering cuisine, and the long-standing connection to Italy’s anti-fascist movement and left-wing politics.
Meet your local art guide for a private walking tour, which will lead you through some of the main highlights such as the Due Torri, the Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno, the Jewish Ghetto, and the fascinating 16th century Anatomical theater in the Archiginnasio Palace, ancient home of the University of Bologna, that shows on its walls one of the most precious heraldry collection in the world. Also visit Piazza Malpighi with the apse of the Gothic church of St. Francis next to the graves of Glossatori, the first professors at the University of Bologna.
Independent lunch: we have suggestions for many wine bars and restaurants.
Proceed to Ferrara then, city of the Renaissance; you will have a panoramic tour of the perfectly preserved city walls, and of the Renaissance quarter, the so-called “Addizione Erculea”, with the magnificent Piazza Ariostea.
Let’s start from Palazzo dei Diamanti, a real gem of the Renaissance architecture of Biagio Rossetti, whose double façade is decorated with a marble composed of thousands of “marble diamonds”.
Walking through the elegant Corso Ercole I d’Este, reach the imposing Castello Estense; from here, passing through Piazza Savonarola, you will arrive at the medieval center with its Palazzo Ducale (now hosting the Town Hal) and with the Cathedral of San Giorgio, whose Romanesque-Gothic façade introduces to a late Renaissance and Baroque interior. From the old Piazza delle Erbe (today’s Piazza Trento Trieste), embellished by the imposing bell tower and the old merchant’s shops, you can reach the medieval area of the Jewish Ghetto and the evocative Via delle Volte. In the evening arrive your amazing resort in Modena’s countryside, it will be your base for the remaining 4 nights. Check in, dinner and overnight.
DAY 6: Parmigiano Reggiano & Balsamic Vinegar Tastings (B,L)
Early bird breakfast this morning! Today you will leave your resort extra early in order to get to an authentic Parmigiano Reggiano producer by cheese making time. There are dairies in an array of cities and you´ll visit a dairy in Reggio Emilia, about one hour from Modena. The visit is complete, and you will be an expert by the end of the cheese tour. You will see all elements of the Parmigiano production from the processing of milk in the vats, the molding of the curd, the salting and then the ageing process of the photogenic cheese wheels.
After this fascinating tour you will head back to the wealthy little Modena for a visit to the 11th century UNESCO World Heritage preserved Duomo and relax with an aperitif, sitting outside if weather permits.
Lunch today is at local trattoria, right in the heart of Modena, tasting traditional cuisine. After lunch, you will probably want to enjoy a short little digestive walk! Before returning to the resort, you will visit a beautiful “Acetaia”, a real “Aceto Balsamico” cellar, where you will learn about the interesting history and production of this liquid gold and taste a few aged balsamic. This is a treat!
Return to the countryside, independent dinner and overnight.
DAY 7: Mantua (B,D)
Breakfast at the resort. Surrounded by three lakes, Mantua was the seat of the Gonzaga family from the 14th century. The impressive architecture reflects the ambitions of the family, in particular the Palazzo Ducale and the Palazzo Te. Renaissance art is in abundance; the Gonzagas were patrons to a number of well-known artists including Andrea Mantegna and the architect Giulio Romano. Mantua is an impressive example of how Italian cities evolved from the 13th century through to the unification of Italy in the late 19th century. Independent lunch.
After lunch you will return to Modena area, at your elegant resort; you can either decide to spend some time soaking up some sun in the swimming pool (out of season in winter time, you could enjoy the beautiful and modern wellness center) or experiencing a guided tour of the resort’s farm and cellar, finally tasting the home-grown Lambrusco (a modern red wine, with a lively effervescent froth, an intense, persistent fragrance and a rich taste enhanced by good tartness).
Dinner and overnight.
DAY 8: Culatello Ham Tasting – The Motor Valley (B,L)
Breakfast at the resort and then head towards Colorno, province of Parma, to visit a small and upmarket Culatello cellar producer’s; you will taste some slices of the “crème de la crème” prosciutto of Italy, finishing with an elegant lunch focused on local specialties. Sample dishes will be offered, including Culatello di Zibello d.o.p. and a selection of the best charcuterie. Superb wines will be chosen for you from the encyclopedic wine list.
After lunch enjoy a digestive “passeggiata” in Parma, a small gourmet town that was also the home of Italy’s famed composers Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini. Do not miss the wonderful Duomo, and neither you don’t’ have to miss the great Teatro Farnese and the Art Gallery, renowned for its paintings by Correggio.
On the way back to the Resort, along the Via Emilia, you will have an interesting tour of the most important factories and museums dedicated to motors such as Ferrari (Maranello), Lamborghini (Modena), Maserati (Sant’Agata Bolognese) and Ducati (Bologna).
When in Maranello, learn all about the “prancing horse” and visit the Ferrari Museum, which is quite large, containing over 40 real models such as Formula 1 racecars from many different decades.
