An early wake up to get most of the day exploring a private conservation project at southwest from Ancud. The park Mawenko is fully dedicated to the preservation of the biodiversity of the island with incredible trails through the forest with stunning waterfalls and relaxing views to the coast. Water is a key element at this park and in the last years it also became a fragile resource, despite the fact that the territory has one of the highest precipitation rates of Chile. We will work in the field with the team of biologist and students checking the trap cams installed to monitor wildlife, maintaining the trails, and collecting data about invertebrates, birds, amphibians, and mammals. We will end the experience planting native trees at the park and sharing some insights from the conservation team at Mawunko. Before we head back to mainland, we will stop at a farm to enjoy an outdoor meal known as Curanto. A very local preparation of shellfish, chicken and smoked pork cooked at hot stones in a cave in the ground. The best way to say goodbye to the island and return to our base in Puerto Varas rest after dinner.
