Visited places

Rio de Janeiro

The inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro call it the “Marvelous City.” Located on the Bay of Guanabara, Rio has a mountainous landscape that contrasts with an intensely blue sea. Here the skyscrapers, colonial buildings andnarrow streets meld in perfect harmony.

Although the city reflects the social inequalities of the country, Rio de Janeiro has great style and is internationallyrenowned for its Christ Corcovado, Pão de Açúcar, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, Carnivals and the warm andlively inhabitants of the city, the cariocas.

Paraty

South of Rio de Janeiro, the Green Coast has a unique combination of mountains, lush rainforest, crystallinelagoons, and virgin tropical islands. And in the middle of all we find Paraty.  Different from other colonial villages by its coastal charm, Paraty has a small but well conserved historic downtown, where we can find artisan shops, highquality restaurants and a cozy and romantic atmosphere.

São Luis

São Luís was founded by the French in 1612, but it was the Portuguese who gave the capital of Maranhão its trademark – the beautiful architectural style. The Lusitanian people were the ones who left a legacy of over three thousand houses and mansions that are spread through the streets and squares of the historic center, at the Praia Grande neighborhood. Recognized by UNESCO, much of the colonial houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries take us on a trip to a past prosperity and ostentation. Today, the old barons’ manors house cultural centers, museums, shops and restaurants that preserve in their facades colorful Portuguese tiles. The barsguarantee the agitation on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lençois Maranhenses

São Luís is the capital of the state of Maranhão and also the capital of reggae in Brazil. It is the only Brazilian capital that was founded by the French, although the city was developed by the Portuguese who constructed 3.500colonial buildings. Most of these buildings date back to the XVIII and XVIX centuries and they areconcentrated in the historical center of the city which has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lençois Maranhenses National Park, a place with unique formation of dunes and lagoons, is located south of São Luís. It is possible to swim in the clear waters and marvel at the varying tones of vivid green and blue.

Atins

Bathed by both the Atlantic Ocean as the Preguiças River, Atins is a fishing village. Here, rusticity mixed with beautiful scenery seems to give another pace to the days. It is the largest coastal town in the municipality and a privileged location, because is where the beaches of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park begin and so the mouth of the Preguiças River. For those who like kitesurfing this is the ideal place, the pristine beaches of the region are quite visited to practice this sport as also being possible to relax there and enjoy the igarapés.

Jericoacoara

With year-round sunshine and warm environment Jericoacoara is among the ten most beautiful beaches on the planet and, despite its fame around the world, the pace of life in the old fishing village remains the same, as wellas the sandy streets and the lack of electric light. Environmental Protection Area, preserving an area of about 200 square kilometers full of golden dunes, mangroves and transparent lagoons, the village is a refuge from modernity of the big cities. Its winds make it one of the best in the country for water sports as they lead rafts, kite boards and windsurfers, who share the ocean in perfect harmony.

Fortaleza

With the power to please people of all ages, the capital of Ceará mixes many things that every traveler likes: natural beauty, culture, music, fun and food to take off one’s hat. It’s more than 2.5 million people in a city where the stunning sea is fully integrated into the daily life. To get some sun during the day or to walk at night, the coast is one of the capital’s highlights. Green sea beaches, bustling waterfront, opportunities to purchase crafts, eat fresh shrimp and crabs, laugh a lot in comedy shows and dance forró. Fortaleza is this and more.

USEFUL INFORMATION

What to bring?

Good, comfortable shoes as the historic cities are cobblestone and very tiring. Also, we recommend them to bewaterproof footwear, to be able to get wet in the rain and in wet zones during nature walks.

Short and long pants, swimsuit, or bikini.

Insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a flashlight.

A bottle to drink water, avoiding the use of disposable containers.

If travelers use contact lenses, we suggest they bring glasses for dune rides because wind can cause discomfort.Although this trekking can be done barefoot (watch out for blisters!), we recommend waterproof trekking sandals aswe will be crossing some rivers along the way.

A 10-15Kg backpack is recommended for trekking. Having a raincoat with the possibility of putting the bag inside ispreferable.

Best travel period?

This travel can be made throughout the year. Between January and April, the weather is unstable, from May toSeptember is the period when lagoons are fuller, and from October to December is the dry season when it’s windierand there is less tourism.

The period of June and July are the celebrations of Sao Joao in the region, there is less accommodation availability, but there are many folk festivals on weekends.

Hiking Level of Difficulty at Juatinga Reserve: the trekking is moderate/difficult, and it goes across well insidethe Atlantic Rainforest (it becomes difficult in case of rain). The trek as whole is around 36 km.

Hiking Level of Difficulty at Lençóis: This trekking is usually flat and easy. It also includes some trekking acrossdunes where it becomes harder of moderate difficulty. The trek as whole is around 20 km. There are a lot of stops along the way for having a bath at the lagoons. It is important to be well protected from the sun and the wind.

Banks and money exchange: The exchange and/or cash withdrawal at ATMs is preferably done at airports forsecurity and because most of these Experiences take place in locations with little banking structure.
